Adjectives
reference — free to readEnglish adjectives never change: tall, was tall, is not tall. Japanese ones carry the tense and the negative themselves, and how they do it depends on which of two kinds the word is. Know the kind and every form follows from one short rule.
The two kinds
Named after what each one does in front of a noun: one goes on with its い, the other needs a な.
Telling them apart
Ending in い is not enough. Every i-adjective does, but so do a handful of na-adjectives, and those are the words that trip everybody up.
Think of it in front of a noun, the way you have heard it used. If it needs な — 静かな部屋 — it is a na-adjective. If it goes straight on — 高い本 — it is an i-adjective.
In an i-adjective the sound before the い is a, i, u or o: たかい, おおきい, ふるい, とおい. None ends in -ei, so a word that does — きれい, ゆうめい, ていねい — is a na-adjective.
Otherwise it has to be learned with the word. A dictionary marks it, and learning 好きな rather than 好き learns it for free.
Usually written in kana, so the い is right there to be taken off. It is part of the word: in kanji it is 綺麗, and the い is inside 麗 (れい).
きれいじゃない · きれいな花
The one that really looks like an i-adjective — a kanji, then い, the same shape as 高い. It comes from the verb 嫌う, and the い is that verb's, not an adjective ending. Its opposite 好き is a na-adjective too.
嫌いじゃない · 嫌いな野菜
Ends in い only when spelled in kana, ゆうめい. In kanji the い is inside 名 (めい), and a kanji's own reading is never an ending; said aloud, めい is just a long me. 丁寧 (ていねい) and 失礼 (しつれい) are the same.
有名じゃない · 有名な歌手
Every form
Read it across. The i-adjective changes its い; the na-adjective stays as it is and takes the ending after it.
| Form | い i-adjective | な na-adjective | What it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain | 高い たかい as it is | 静かだ しずかだ + だ | The dictionary form, and the casual present: it is tall, it is quiet. A na-adjective needs だ to end a sentence, and in speech the だ is often left off. |
| Negative | 高くない たかくない い → くない | 静かじゃない しずかじゃない + じゃない | Is not, said casually. |
| Past | 高かった たかかった い → かった | 静かだった しずかだった + だった | Was, said casually. |
| Past negative | 高くなかった たかくなかった い → くなかった | 静かじゃなかった しずかじゃなかった + じゃなかった | Was not, said casually. |
| Polite | 高いです たかいです + です | 静かです しずかです + です | The present with です on the end. For an i-adjective です only adds politeness; the tense is still the adjective's own. |
| Polite negative | 高くないです たかくないです い → くないです | 静かじゃないです しずかじゃないです + じゃないです | Is not, politely. くありません and じゃありません say the same thing a little more formally: 高くありません, 静かじゃありません. |
| Polite past | 高かったです たかかったです い → かったです | 静かでした しずかでした + でした | Was, politely. An i-adjective keeps the past on itself and adds です after it — 高かったです, never 高いでした. |
| Polite past negative | 高くなかったです たかくなかったです い → くなかったです | 静かじゃなかったです しずかじゃなかったです + じゃなかったです | Was not, politely. Or, more formally, くありませんでした and じゃありませんでした. |
| Te-form | 高くて たかくて い → くて | 静かで しずかで + で | Joins it to what comes next: 安くておいしい, cheap and tasty; 静かできれい, quiet and clean. |
| Adverb | 高く たかく い → く | 静かに しずかに + に | Says how something is done, or what it becomes: 静かに話す, to speak quietly; 高くなる, to get expensive. |
| Before a noun | 高い本 たかいほん as it is | 静かな部屋 しずかなへや + な | Describes the noun after it: 高い本, 静かな部屋. The な is for na-adjectives only — nothing goes between an i-adjective and its noun. |
じゃ is how it is said. In writing, and in formal speech, it is では: 静かではない, 静かではありません. The two mean the same thing.
いい
Good — and the one i-adjective that breaks the rule.
いい and よい are one word, and いい is the everyday way of saying it. Every form that changes the ending is built from よい; only いい itself, いいです and いい before a noun keep the い.
Words built on いい do the same: かっこいい, cool, is かっこよくない. かわいい only ends in いい by accident, and is かわいくない like any other.

Common mistakes
Each of these is a sentence a beginner writes sooner or later — nearly always by treating one kind as the other.
The past goes on an i-adjective itself. でした follows na-adjectives and nouns.
じゃない follows na-adjectives and nouns. An i-adjective changes its い instead.
きれい is a na-adjective. Its い is part of the word and does not come off.
A na-adjective never takes い, and in front of a noun it needs な.
な is for na-adjectives only. An i-adjective goes straight onto its noun.
いい builds its forms from よい. Only いい, いいです and いい before a noun keep the い.
